Helping you write the content only you can write
There’s something about small business culture in Portland. It’s a place where weirdness and originality are on full display. Where out-there ideas can find a spot in the sun. Where no one’s wasting time trying to appeal to everyone. A Portland idea knows what it is and who it’s for.
And yet truly original ideas are the hardest ones to describe. When small business owners are getting ready to share their idea to a new audience, I often hear them saying things like…
“It’s kinda hard to describe.”
“Well, it’s like that other thing… and also totally different.”
“I need to work on my elevator pitch, but you get the point, right?”
Sound familiar?

Get past your creative block
The challenges that block creative people from expressing themselves are often the same—whether they’re solopreneurs, founders, artists, screenwriters, environmental consultants, or therapists. They expect to be able to develop their idea, organize their thinking, clarify their message, and optimize flow—all at the same time. They get frustrated when their first draft isn’t perfect and conclude “I’m not much of a writer.”
If you’ve said that before, you may simply need help focusing on one step at a time. That’s where Find the Words can help.
Find the Words is a writing coaching and copywriting service for small businesses and indie professionals, created by me, MJ Halberstadt (he/him).
Feel confident telling your story
I’ll walk you through a process designed to suit your goals, skills, interests, and frankly, how our vibes overlap. Choose between three service types: I can write it, you can write it, or we can write it. All of them build on the skills you have and the idea you already know.
Writing is a privilege and it can be a lot of fun when one does it well.
What Find the Words means to creators
“I'm actually looking forward to writing my next draft—I'm not feeling RAAAGH about it anymore!”
— a therapist (and Find the Words beta tester)
“MJ perfectly understands the assignment—every time. He is excellent at communicating options and then delivering fresh, fluid prose that makes me look good.”
— Joshua Kaufman, filmmaker
“MJ manages to take my little specks of ideas and help turn them into powerful content full of heart, soul, and meaning—all while maintaining the company’s brand and voice. Customers routinely tell me how much they love our writing.”
— Ryan, founder of Mental Health Match
